Material and Care

A closer look at the leathers and finishes in our collection, with simple guidance for keeping your bag at its best.

Leather types & finishes

Smooth & grained cowhide

Our cowhide selection includes first-layer, top-grain and full-grain leathers. Finishes range from a smooth surface to a more pronounced pebbled texture. The material used for each style is described on its product page.

Split cowhide

Split leather comes from a lower layer of the hide and can be finished with a smooth or textured surface. Selected styles, including Nancy and Lady Madonna, use split cowhide.

Calfskin

Calfskin appears in selected styles and trims, including Mona and Lagoona. Its surface and feel depend on the finish, with smooth and grained expressions across the collection.

Suede

Suede has a soft, brushed nap that changes subtly with touch and light. It appears alongside smooth leather in styles such as Lana Dana, and alongside pebbled calfskin in Mona.

Frosted finishes

Golden Sahara combines smooth cowhide with frosted leather, creating a subtle contrast in texture. Handle the matte panels gently and check with us before choosing a cleaner if you are unsure of the finish.

Vegetable-tanned & oil-waxed leather

Vegetable-tanned leather appears in styles including Mosaic, Cleo and Louve Locket Patina. It can deepen in colour and develop a sheen with use. Damascus is described with an oil-waxed finish. Water and friction may leave marks on these more expressive surfaces.

Glossy & coated finishes

Some styles have a polished or coated surface, including Laura and Petra. The degree of shine and the feel of the finish vary by piece. Use care products intended for that particular finish.

Woven leather

Woven styles such as Cici create texture through interlaced leather rather than a different leather type. The construction benefits from gentle handling and care around the weave.

Smooth & grained leather

Begin with the care guidance for your particular bag and finish.

  • Remove surface dust gently with a soft, dry cloth.
  • Use a cleaner or conditioner only if it is suitable for the finish. Test first in an inconspicuous area.
  • Apply a suitable product to a cloth, rather than directly to the bag, and use it sparingly.
  • If the bag gets wet, blot with a clean, absorbent cloth and let it dry naturally, away from heat.
  • Avoid overloading the bag or pulling at woven leather strips.

Suede care

  • Use a clean suede brush gently to remove surface dust and refresh the nap.
  • Keep ordinary leather creams, oils and conditioners away from suede.
  • If using a protector, choose one intended for suede and spot-test it first.
  • Blot moisture without rubbing and allow the bag to dry naturally before brushing.
  • Take care against light clothing: friction and moisture can cause colour transfer.

Glossy & coated finishes

  • Wipe gently with a soft, dry cloth. Follow the product guidance before using any cleaner.
  • Avoid abrasive materials, alcohol, solvents and ordinary leather conditioner unless specifically suitable for the finish.
  • Store separately from dark or strongly coloured items to reduce the risk of colour transfer.

Other materials

Some Bagulia pieces combine leather with canvas, raffia, cotton or plush textiles. These materials need their own approach.

Remove dust gently, avoid soaking or machine-washing the bag, and follow the guidance for the complete piece. Protect leather trims when treating textile panels.

Storage & everyday care

  • Store in a clean, dry place away from sunlight and radiators.
  • Use a breathable dust bag if you have one. Avoid sealing leather in plastic.
  • Support the shape lightly with clean, unprinted tissue when needed, without stretching the bag.
  • Keep perfume, sanitiser, oils and strong cleaning products away from the surface.
